Outdoor Action |

A well known name among outdoor enthusiasts, CamelBak was founded over 30 years ago in 1989 by Michael Eidson. Back then, long before the name became a mainstay, Michael Eidson, an EMT and bicycle enthusiast was preparing to race in the “Hotter'N Hell 100", which is a 100 mile road race based over four days in the middle of Wichita Falls, Texas.

Being the middle of summer, hydration was a prime concern for Michael which led him to come up with the idea of using a IV drip bag, usually used to supply medical patients, to keep him hydrated throughout the race. He filled the bag with water and slipped it into a tube sock, allowing him to stuff it inside his bike jersey.

Michael strung the hose over his shoulder and clamped it shut with a clothespeg. He used his homemade contraption to supply himself with hands free hydration throughout the race while other cyclists laughed, fumbling for their traditional bottles, and that was the start of CamelBak.

Although the company has passed through many hands since Michael in 1989, CamelBak still strives to innovate, being the first to provide BPA-Free bottles to the world. To this day, the CamelBak name carries the essence of quality and adventure instilled by its founder over 30 years ago.

Hydration Packs

Undoubtedly the most iconic ‘CamelBak’ product is the hydration pack, mimicking the original IV drip bag invented by Micahel in 1989.

When it comes to  hydration packs, the main difference is capacity. At Outdoor Action we stock 3 different sizes, 1.5L, 2.0L and 3L. Based on a study by Backes and Fitzgerald (2016), the average recommended water intake whilst exercising is around 250ml every twenty minutes (obviously this varies from person to person), which means that a 1.5L hydration pack would last for a two hour exercise session.

Pack size by exercise duration:

1.5L Capacity - Last up to two hours of exercise

2.0L Capacity - Last up to two hours and forty minutes of exercise

3.0L Capacity - Last up to four hours of exercise

Note: (These guidelines are a rough estimation based on a generalised research paper. These guidelines may not be suitable for you specifically. Please consult a qualified health professional to discuss personalised hydration requirements).
