Description

A robust and fully waterproof jacket, the Tupilak is crafted for the harsh demands of Winter and Alpine climbing on the steepest terrain and most imposing mountain faces. Engineered to Mountain Equipment’s most advanced specification, this jacket is designed to perform in the planet’s most unforgiving conditions.

Rooted in the brutal landscape of the Scottish Winter, the Tupilak Jacket embodies a streamlined yet highly protective design. It has become a standard for climbers pushing hard mixed and ice routes amidst relentless weather. These same qualities have proven indispensable across the globe—from Himalayan first ascents and iconic Alpine walls to challenging lines in Alaska. Despite weighing just 500g in a size large, many of the brand’s most weight-conscious climbers regularly choose it over ultralight shells for the extra confidence and durability it offers when venturing deep into the mountains.

Constructed entirely from GORE-TEX Pro and a durable 80-denier face fabric, this jacket delivers the abrasion resistance needed for mixed climbs and the flexibility demanded on strenuous, multi-day ascents.

The tailored Alpine fit ensures unrestricted movement without superfluous fabric. Yet, it is perhaps the Super Alpine Hood that has made this jacket indispensable to so many serious climbers and Alpinists. More spacious than the Mountain HC Hood found on the Lhotse or Makalu, it offers outstanding protection and visibility when worn over a helmet. The seamless face panel has been shaped to shield the wearer from biting winds and spindrift, while maintaining comfort and freedom of movement.

Two generously sized chest pockets are placed above the harness line for ease of access to essentials. Meanwhile, the sleeves have been designed to fit securely over gloves, effectively sealing out snow and rain when the weather turns.

Features

Materials

  • The GORE-TEX Pro 80D fabric used throughout ensures the jacket is waterproof, windproof, and highly breathable, offering dependable dryness in all conditions.
  • The primary fabric consists of 80D GORE-TEX Pro (148gsm) in a 3-layer construction with a DWR coating, providing a hydrostatic head of 28,000mm and RET <7.
  • Every seam is sealed with 13mm tape to guard against water ingress.
Certified to meet the GORE-TEX Storm Test for extreme weather resistance.

Patterning & Design

  • The jacket weighs 500g / 1 lb 1.6 oz (size large).
  • It is ideal for disciplines such as ice and mixed climbing, alpine ascents, and general mountaineering.
  • Its minimalist yet hardwearing design is tailored for optimal movement and protection.
  • The classic Alpine Fit allows for full mobility without surplus fabric, and is cut to integrate effectively into a layering system.
  • Compared to the Lhotse Jacket, the Tupilak has a slightly trimmer hem and shorter length, making it better suited for steep technical climbing.
  • Built with Mountain Equipment’s highest level of Storm Construction, the jacket is designed for maximum weather resistance and toughness.
  • Articulated sleeves minimise hem lift when reaching overhead, aiding efficient movement while climbing.
  • A laminated and bonded hanging loop is positioned discreetly below the rear hood.

Hood Configuration

  • The Super Alpine Helmet Compatible Hood is fully adjustable with rear and lateral volume controls, twin frontal adjusters, and internal silicone strips to grip a helmet securely.
  • A laminated and wired peak maintains clear vision in strong winds or when wearing goggles or glasses.
  • The seamless face panel shields effectively against spin drift and wind chill, without compromising comfort or mobility.
  • An internal rear hood adjustment cord is integrated with a roll-away clip for neat stowage.
  • Internal Cohaesive® cord locks and tunnel channels allow for precise adjustments.

Pocket Configuration

  • Two large-volume external chest pockets with YKK® AquaGuard® zips are positioned for easy access when wearing a harness or pack, and can comfortably fit gloves and other gear.
  • The YKK® #5 AquaGuard® pocket zips include internal storm flaps, drainage channels, and secure zip garages.
  • Ergonomic zip pullers have been designed for ease of use even with gloves or mitts.
  • The pockets feature fully laminated construction with waterproof pocket bags.
  • One internal zipped security pocket offers secure storage for small valuables.

Centre Front Zip

  • A full-length, two-way YKK® AquaGuard® #5 front zip is backed with a laser-cut internal storm flap.
  • The hem includes a press stud fastening system that allows ventilation while keeping the jacket anchored during movement.
  • Ergonomic zip pullers ensure hassle-free operation even in bulky gloves.
  • A brushed microfleece lining on the chin guard offers comfort against the face.

Cuffs & Sleeves Configuration

  • Sleeves are articulated and pre-shaped to allow high-reaching arm movements with ease.
  • Bonded cuffs with Velcro adjustment provide a reliable and comfortable seal, either over or under gloves and mitts.

Waist & Hem Construction

  • Internal dual tether drawcords at the hem help retain body heat and fine-tune fit.
  • The pull tab is reinforced with bar tacks for added durability.
  • The hem is cleanly bonded for a streamlined finish.
